Campos do Valado

The Campos do Valado (Valado Fields) belong to the parish of Valado dos Frades in the municipality of Nazaré. Here we find an extensive flat area of very rich and fertile soil that is irrigated by the River Alcoa. This land became the ideal place for the cultivation of a range of fruits and vegetables.

In Valado dos Frades we also find one of the most important granaries in lands around Alcobaça: the “Quinta do Campo”, where, in the 14th century, the Cistercian monks established a farming school.

The fields are still used today for growing produce that is sold in markets across Portugal, particularly in Lisbon.
